Applications

Markets specifying this grade

Aquarium

Aquarium and aquaculture

Provides a carbonate substrate that supports alkalinity in systems drawing it down, and a grain size matched to livestock and flow.

Water · most specified

Water treatment

Dissolves into low-alkalinity water passing through it, raising hardness and buffering capacity.

Aquarium selection

Selecting for an aquarium

Aquarium applications for this grade, and where another grade is specified instead.

01

Cichlid and hard-water systems

Particle size suited to systems where the substrate is worked by livestock and where an open bed is wanted.

02

High flow and contact media

Highest flow resistance of the three. In a vessel or sump the larger particle maintains flow through the media rather than around it.

03

Not for a level sand bed

Reads as gravel rather than sand, and detritus passes into the bed rather than resting on it. Specify fine or medium.

Depth calculator

Aquarium coverage calculator

Bed area and depth to weight, at this grade's bulk density.

Calculated at 88 lb per cubic foot, the typical bulk density of the coarse grade. Coarse settles less than fine. Add allowance where the bed will be disturbed.
